MetaCTF@UVA: Our 5th Annual Event!

This year, we're holding our annual CTF event at the University of Virginia on Saturday, November 2nd. It will be a competition that challenges and encourages participants to learn new techniques and concepts related to cybersecurity, from technical skills such as reconnaissance, cryptography, binary and web exploitation, reverse engineering, and forensics to legal and business skills such as risk management and incident response.

This CTF is meant to be an opportunity to learn more about cybersecurity and practice hacking in a safe and legal environment, so no experience is expected or required!

Registration:
This CTF will be open to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students from any school (with a maximum of 1 grad student per team). Participants will compete in teams of four--if you don't have a team, we will match participants into teams at the competition. Registration is free and includes breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt!

Location:
This event will be held at the UVA Darden School. There will be free parking, and UVA transit has a Northline bus stop right outside.

Schedule:
The event will run from 9am to 5pm with a break for lunch. Check-in will start at 8. Please take a look at the schedule for more details.

What is a CTF?

A CTF (capture-the-flag) event is a cybersecurity competition that involves a variety of different computer skills. MetaCTF will test your security skills and googling abilities with problems from reconnaissance to web exploitation to cryptography.

What is a flag?

Answers to problems are called "flags." The goal of each CTF problem is to find the flag, and flags are obtained by cracking the cipher, pwning the application, or otherwise solving the challenge. Finding the flag is akin to getting a balloon in a programming competition.

What about prizes?

We aren't announcing this year's prizes yet, but in the past we've given away Steam Links, Raspberry Pis, battery packs, wireless keyboards, and more!

Don't have a team? We can help.

Even if you don't have a team, you can definitely still come to the competition. We will pair you up with other participants at the event to form a super awesome team.

Help! I don't know any cybersecurity stuff.

No experience is required! In fact, you'll probably even learn more than your peers. We will provide plenty of hints and assistance throughout the competition. Also, all the problems are designed to teach you how to do them.
